Idea SummaryThe utility of Bringing Opportunities to Your Collection Efforts (BOYCE) is that it’s an innovative solution to a critical challenge faced by Midnight Sun Elementary student/staff, 3D printing enthusiasts, and recycling advocates. It builds on and works with existing technology to take waste plastic and make it available to the school and the market as the foundation of creating a maker lab. A place where the tools and tech exist to create things that didn’t exist before. This may one day inspire to have the space designated as a STEAM campus. The reason this project was selected for the competition is Midnight Sun Elementary has three 3D printers, and a regular supply of recyclable plastics in the lunch containers. We identified the steps from a to z as; collecting, washing, grinding, and transporting the material from the kitchen to the maker lab, placed in a vented Filabot, and spooled into filament. The food service containers are #1 PET with over 300 cycled through on a daily basis. The project is feasible with this sustainable waste product that can be turned into a profit source to fund the club activities. It may even create the very filament that may be used to construct parts of BOYCE 1.0.
