1in9 Charities, Inc. is an Arizona-based 501(c)(3) non-profit with roots right here in the Valley — and a mission forged from lived experience. Twenty-eight years ago, Raymond Scott's kidneys failed at age 29. He had high blood pressure, but like 90% of the 37 million Americans living with chronic kidney disease, he had no idea his kidneys were in danger. He and his wife Analyn turned that experience into a movement: make sure other families never find out the hard way.
At the heart of that movement is the Do You Know? Challenge — 1in9's flagship community health campaign focused on awareness, prevention, and early detection of kidney disease. The campaign meets Arizonans where they are, helping them understand their risk factors, know their eGFR (a critical measure of kidney function), and become their own biggest health advocates. In a state where diabetes and high blood pressure are widespread, this kind of education is life-changing.
That education comes to life each year at SMASH the THREAT, 1in9's annual pickleball tournament and community health pop-up in Tempe, AZ — a rally against the triple threat of kidney disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Free health screenings, community education, and inclusive sport come together in one family-friendly event. At the 2025 inaugural event, a screening caught a life-threatening condition that would have otherwise gone undetected — proof of what happens when community and health awareness meet. Now in its second year with 18 local and regional partners, the event is expanding into a 27+ city North American health empowerment tour and docuseries.
Arizona is where this story started. A grant from Arizona Financial Credit Union would help ensure it keeps changing lives right here at home.
