This eclectic venue fosters creativity and connection by hosting a variety of events, including art exhibitions, live performances, workshops, and community gatherings. Established in 1971, Alwun House is the longest continuously running art gallery in the state.
Our primary contribution is the promotion of local artists, providing a platform to showcase their work and gain visibility. By organizing art shows and exhibitions, Alwun House not only supports artists but also enriches the local cultural landscape, encouraging community members to engage with and appreciate the arts.
Alwun House has received significant recognition for its impact on our community. In 2013 Alwun House was awarded the Governor’s Arts Award for “Community.” Just in this century, Alwun House has been recognized by the Phoenix New Times with “Best of Phoenix” Awards for 22 of the 26 years. In 1993 Mayor Terry Goddard stated "A Pioneer in the rebirth of cultural and artistic activity in Central Phoenix, Alwun House is an important component of downtown revitalization." In 2004 Kimber Lanning founder of Local First said “The current arts community can easily be traced to 1971 when Alwun House was first established.” So, as you can see AH is a significant integral part of Phoenix’ arts community.
The venue also plays a pivotal role in community building. Alwun House has evolved beyond a traditional arts organization, becoming a vital force in revitalizing the Garfield neighborhood in Phoenix. By actively engaging the community, Alwun House fosters creativity and connection while addressing local needs and aspirations.
