The Arizona Trail Association’s Veteran Engagement & Trail Stewardship (VETS) Program is built on a different philosophy: we call it "Mission Therapy."
We believe veterans don’t need to be "fixed;” they need to be part of something greater than themselves. They need purpose.
Military service may end, but the desire to contribute never does. Many veterans struggle not because they have forgotten how to lead, but because no one has given them another meaningful opportunity. Mission therapy restores that sense of purpose through meaningful work that benefits both people and place.
Veterans work side by side, maintaining and sometimes rebuilding the Arizona National Scenic Trail—digging drainage, restoring tread, clearing fallen trees, and protecting one of Arizona’s greatest natural resources. Every project improves access to public lands while rebuilding confidence, camaraderie, and belonging.
There is a moment on nearly every project when the work fades into the background and conversations begin. Veterans who arrived as strangers share stories of combat, loss, transition, and resilience. Not because they’re asked to, but because shared purpose creates trust. Healing becomes a byproduct of accomplishing a mission together.
The impact extends far beyond the trail. Participants return home as stronger spouses, parents, employees, and community leaders. Many become long-term volunteers, conservation advocates, or mentors for the next generation of veterans.
Support from Arizona Financial would help remove financial barriers by providing tools, safety equipment, meals, transportation assistance, and volunteer support, enabling more veterans to answer the call once again.
