You chose to provide a short written description (up to 300 words) explaining how your organization makes an impact in the community.The Oasis Sanctuary is a permanent home to 749 parrots, cockatoos, macaws and other Psittacine birds and is the only facility of our kind in Arizona, one of the largest in the US. Many people are not aware of the serious need for sanctuary for pet parrots which is a growing issue in our community and beyond. Our organization is unique and is located right here in our community serving the needs where there is great demand. Our birds are surrendered into our care from a variety of situations including voluntary surrender by parrot owners not equipped to handle caring for a parrot, instinctual behaviors making parrots unsuitable as companion pets, hoarding, smuggled parrots confiscated at border, and the death of an owner. Generally, our flock consists of birds that cannot be rehomed due to debilitating mental and physical issues, aggression, wild instinct and unique pair bonding. They present challenges that domesticated animals do not have. Unfortunately, there is a high demand but limited resources or qualified sanctuaries across the country that have space. Each year we receive over 1,500 inquiries for birds needing immediate placement, however we only accept those with physical or emotional difficulties precluding them from other placement.
Grant funds will be used for specifically for veterinary care, medication and general operating expenses. Over the past 29 years, The Oasis Sanctuary has grown from 125 birds to nearly 800 birds cared for by 10 FT caregivers. The need is urgent.
The sanctuary resides in Cochise County, although we serve nationwide, most inquiries and relinquishments come from our local community and surrounding areas in Arizona. We offer a unique service that very few organizations do.
We collaborate with other organizations or adoption groups when its appropriate to rehome birds. We offer assistance in the event they are unsuccessful in adopting out or do not have capacity for long term care, we offer support by accepting them to our sanctuary.
