Through innovative programs that remove barriers to pet ownership, we improve the lives of both animals and the people who love them. Our Fidos for Freedom: Pets for Vets Program pairs retired military members and veterans with rescued shelter dogs who become emotional support companions, providing comfort, routine, purpose, and unconditional love during the transition to civilian life. Many veterans experience anxiety, depression, PTSD, or social isolation, while many shelter dogs have experienced trauma, neglect, or abandonment. By bringing them together, we create healing on both ends of the leash. What makes our program unique is our commitment to supported pet ownership. We recognize that financial barriers can prevent veterans from adopting or keeping a beloved companion, so we provide ongoing assistance with food, supplies, and veterinary care. This support helps families keep their pets, reduces owner surrenders, and creates lasting, successful placements that benefit both people and animals. Beyond helping individual veterans, the program strengthens our community by reducing shelter overcrowding, increasing adoptions, promoting responsible pet ownership, and fostering meaningful connections between people and animals. Every successful match creates a ripple effect—improving mental wellbeing, preserving the human-animal bond, and giving both a veteran and a rescued shelter dog the opportunity for a brighter future together.
