You chose to provide a short written description (up to 300 words) explaining how your organization makes an impact in the community.Honor Flight Arizona honors our WWII, Korea and Vietnam Veterans by sending them to D.C. to visit the memorials dedicated to their service to our country. They appreciate the caring, compassionate volunteers that make their trip a wonderful experience. Our Vietnam Veterans especially appreciate the 'Welcome Home" that they never had when they returned from serving. Hundreds of people gather for the return flight waving flags and banners to show their appreciation to our vets. Southwest Airlines makes an announcement at the gate area both departing and returning. Everyone in the gate area forms a line to clap and sometimes shout "USA" to honor our vets. Our Vets impact their expanded community by telling their stories to the people that they meet at the memorials. Children. especially, enhance their learning experience by talking with our Vets. Our Veterans appreciate making the trip with their fellow vets because they can open up and tell stories that they might not share with their family. Here's an excerpt from a thank you: "Honor Flight allows us to be transported back to a time in our lives, surrounded by a loving and caring support structure to face our past experiences, embrace them and to help heal by providing a positive experience to what is often a dark period in our lives." Veterans have already paid the price, so they receive this trip free of charge. Our cost is $1,300 per person. Our Veterans are the reason that our country has been free for 250 years. Our national organization has flown 317,000 Veterans, locally Honor Flight Arizona has flown over 4,000 since its inception in 2008. We currently have a waitlist of over 1,100. Everyone associated with Honor Flight Arizona is a volunteer.
