You chose to provide a short written description (up to 300 words) explaining how your organization makes an impact in the community.St. Martin’s Animal Foundation (SMAF) is a Prescott-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to fostering empathy, environmental stewardship, and community resilience. Through our hands-on educational programming and the development of our upcoming closed-loop permaculture community farm, The Veggie Ranch, we bridge the gap between animal welfare, environmental conservation, and youth development.
Our community impact is driven by three core pillars designed to empower local youth. First, our Humane Education curriculum brings sanctuary ambassador animals into classrooms to teach early elementary through high school students about empathy, responsibility, and the deep psychological connections between animal welfare and community safety. Second, our Eco-Consciousness & Stewardship track guides students through high-desert ecology, water conservation, and personal carbon footprints, inspiring them to become active protectors of local habitats. Finally, our Healthy Habits & Personal Gardening program teaches practical, sustainable life skills. Youth learn the science of growing their own food from seed to harvest, directly combating local food insecurity. To encourage healthy choices at home, students receive our custom, plant-based "From Seed to Snack" recipe booklets alongside regionally appropriate seed packets.
As our classroom partnerships grow, we invite students to transition to our living classroom at The Veggie Ranch. Here, local youth will get their hands in the dirt—learning to build drought-resistant garden beds, harvest organic crops, and work directly alongside rescued animals.
A Local Causes grant will directly fund the vital community giveaways that reinforce our curriculum at home, including eco-friendly learning tools, starter seed packets, and healthy nutritional guides for local families. By investing in SMAF, the Arizona Financial Foundation is investing in a kinder, more sustainable, and food-secure future for Arizona youth.
