Submission NameAllegheny Health Network (AHN) Forbes Hospital Emergency Department Behavioral Health Suite
Project Intent StatementThis renovation intends to respond to a need for behavioral health care in the community by creating a dedicated suite in the emergency department (ED). Approximately one in every eight ED visits in the US is associated with a behavioral health issue. Allegheny Health Network’s Forbes Hospital chose to prioritize this care by renovating a portion of their existing ED to create a secure and safe suite that meets the unique needs of patients. The design of the environment prioritizes the patient experience and all decisions were made with physical and emotional wellbeing in mind. As patients wait for an inpatient bed to become available, soft perimeter lighting, recliners, large-scale nature graphics, and a soothing color palette provide comfort. The staff workroom has unobstructed views of the patient area through frameless laminated glass with gaps for clear and easy communication. Anti-ligature finishes minimize the risk of self-harm, ensuring the safety of both patients and staff.
