Submission NameUniversity of Pittsburgh, Big Idea Center
Project Intent StatementThe Big Idea Center is an adaptive reuse of a former bookstore, re-imagined as a prominent new beacon for entrepreneurship for the Pitt community and a unique venue for public gatherings. The interior renovation takes advantage of large existing windows that bring natural light deep into the interior, creating a space where aspiring entrepreneurs can collaborate.
In re-envisioning the 7,000 SF multistory space, we created a flexible public floor plan with private and open gathering areas anchored by Saxbys, a student-run café. In addition to the public amenities, the main lobby can also host events such as the Center’s Big Idea Blitz or general networking opportunities. The lower level is a private student area that includes a classroom, quiet study nooks, and a formal meeting room. Interior glazing is a prominent design element throughout the lower level, allowing light and views from the open staircase to provide students with an authentic entrepreneurial incubator experience.
