Submission NameUniversity of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Passavant Centers of Excellence
Project Intent StatementThe renovation intends to reorganize a complicated program and establish Center of Excellence service lines that are distinct, yet cohesive with a refreshed aesthetic for the hospital. University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s (UPMC) Passavant McCandless campus serves thousands of residents of the surrounding North Hills communities of Pittsburgh. The renovation project encompassed interior finish upgrades to the hospital’s outpatient testing and Centers of Excellence, including Magee Women’s Health, the Heart and Vascular Institute, and Hillman Cancer Center. Each Center of Excellence is framed by “piers” with their own entrances and signage that visually break up the main corridor. A curving laminated wood wall guides visitors through the space with subtle elegance. A new monumental stair connects the Centers of Excellence to the cafeteria on the floor below, improving access to food service while expanding the area available for visitors to explore while they wait.
