Submission NameWUWA Textiles
University NameWashington University
Submission DescriptionWUWA transforms post-industrial textile waste into a biodegradable, cardboard-like material. Versatile and eco-friendly, our product can be used for applications like signage and packaging. While currently focused on coffee sleeves, we aim to license our material for digital printing in the future.
A local recycler, Remains, shreds part of the 11.3M tons of textile waste that ends up in landfills annually. WUWA provides a scalable, circular solution that can use this waste to replace many plastics and single-use items, like coffee sleeves, benefiting both the environment and local businesses.
WUWA’s material costs compete with the competitive coffee sleeve market. That, combined with machinery instead of costly handmade production, achieves profitability. Further growth into higher-margin products (e.g. digital print substrates) and manufacturing licensing will scale these profits.
