Now in its third year, the Dr. Rhae-Ann Booker Award for Inclusive Excellence honors the life, legacy, and leadership of Dr. Rhae-Ann Booker, former Vice President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at University of Michigan Health-West. Dr. Booker was a passionate advocate for comprehensive, data-driven DEI strategies and was instrumental in designing Davenport University’s first university-wide DEI Strategic Plan.

Her influence extended well beyond academia. She championed health equity, developed policies to increase the enrollment and retention of underrepresented populations, and forged powerful partnerships with community organizations such as the Grand Rapids African American Health Institute. Her tireless work earned both national and regional recognition, underscoring the lasting impact she made on the West Michigan community. Dr. Booker also dedicated herself to community service, serving on numerous boards and committees.

The Dr. Rhae-Ann Booker Award for Inclusive Excellence, established by the Grand Rapids Chamber, recognizes individuals who exemplify exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to Inclusion and Belonging in West Michigan. The award celebrates leaders who carry forward Dr. Booker’s legacy by creating transformative initiatives that have a measurable impact on organizations and communities.

The award will be presented at the Grand Rapids Chamber’s Talent and Human Resources Summit, honoring an individual whose vision and actions inspire others to prioritize inclusion in their workplaces and communities.

Nominees for the Dr. Rhae-Ann Booker Award for Inclusive Excellence should demonstrate:

  • Unwavering dedication to creating an inclusive culture.
  • Significant impact on inclusion and belonging within their organization and the broader community.
  • Proven leadership in promoting inclusion and belonging.
  • Successful development and implementation of programs addressing the needs of marginalized groups.

Key Accomplishments to Highlight in Nominations

  • Innovative Programs: Specific initiatives or programs the nominee has developed or led that have significantly impacted inclusion and belonging.
  • Community Engagement: Efforts to engage with and support diverse communities through partnerships, outreach, and advocacy.
  • Mentorship and Support: Mentorship programs or support networks established to assist individuals from underrepresented groups in personal and professional growth.
  • Policy and Practice Changes: Inclusive policy or practice changes the nominee has championed within their organization or community.
 

Rules

All submissions must be completed by Friday, September 11 at 5:00 p.m. 

All nominees must meet the criteria outlined above to be considered.

The top nominees will be interviewed by the Dr. Rhae-Ann Booker Award Committee..

The nominees must be able to attend the Talent and Human Resources Summit in person, on Tuesday, November 10, 2026.
