The C.A.R. Leadership Academy is dedicated to shaping the next generation of leaders within the California real estate industry. With a mission to cultivate excellence and foster a diverse, inclusive, and forward-thinking leadership community, the Academy is a transformative program that equips emerging leaders with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to navigate today’s dynamic real estate landscape.

Guided by the core principles of collaboration, integrity, and innovation, the Leadership Academy empowers REALTORS® to drive meaningful change, advocate for the industry, and make lasting contributions to their professional and civic communities. Through immersive learning experiences, access to some of the top thought leaders in California real estate, and a focus on strategic leadership development, Academy members gain the tools and knowledge to not only lead but to transform and inspire.

Joining the Leadership Academy is more than a step in your career—it's an investment in your future and a pathway to becoming a key decision-maker and influencer within the real estate profession.

 

Time & Monetary Committment Information:

  • Time Commitment: Participants are expected to attend eight sessions throughout the year, with in-person meetings scheduled in conjunction with the Winter, Spring, and Fall C.A.R. Business Meetings. Attendance at all sessions is mandatory, with one excused absence permitted under exceptional circumstances (such as medical or family emergencies). A make-up session may be provided for the excused absence. Punctuality is required at each session. 
  • Monetary Commitment: Tuition for the program is $1,000. This tuition may be covered by the participant, their local Association of REALTORS® (AOR), or another sponsor. However, C.A.R. will not be responsible for covering any tuition costs. It is up to each local AOR to decide whether they will fund this, but it is not mandatory for them to do so. Please note that tuition is non-refundable. 
  • Travel Costs: Participants are responsible for covering their own travel expenses to attend the in-person sessions. These sessions are scheduled alongside C.A.R.'s Winter, Spring, and Fall Business Meetings. It is advised to discuss these travel costs with your local AOR for any possible assistance. 

Attendance Requirements and Policy: 

  • Attendance at all eight sessions of the C.A.R. Leadership Academy is mandatory. Participants must arrive on time for each session. 
  • Excused Absence Policy: One excused absence may be granted under exceptional circumstances, such as medical issues or family emergencies. If an excused absence is granted, the participant may be provided with a make-up option to ensure they receive all the necessary training. 
  • Repeated tardiness or failure to attend sessions may result in removal from the program.

Note on Selection Process: While participation in the Academy is a significant leadership opportunity, it does not guarantee a future leadership position with your local association or C.A.R. The focus is on personal and professional development through leadership training, rather than on specific titles or roles.

Here’s a guide to help you understand the eligibility criteria, selection process, and application requirements, ensuring you put your best foot forward.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the C.A.R. Leadership Academy, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Professional Standing: Be a California REALTOR® in good standing with at least 5 years of experience.
  • Commitment to Leadership: Show a strong dedication to expanding your leadership capabilities within the real estate industry, including significant experience in community service or roles within local, state, or national associations.
  • Conflict-Free Participation: Confirm that there are no conflicts with your current company or other roles that could impede your participation in the Academy.
  • Leadership Aspirations: Demonstrate an intent to pursue leadership positions on boards, commissions, or other influential roles within community and industry organizations.

 

Selection Criteria

The selection process for the C.A.R. Leadership Academy is designed to identify individuals who exhibit strong leadership potential and a deep commitment to the real estate industry and community. Our evaluation criteria include the following key components:

  • Professional Background: Demonstrate business success and a strong track record in volunteer roles with local boards or civic organizations, highlighting personal integrity.
  • Committee and Leadership Experience: Show involvement in committees at state, local, or national levels, including specific roles held, and leadership positions within the community.
  • Intent and Commitment: Indicate plans to pursue positions on boards, commissions, or other leadership roles, and confirm readiness for the time and energy required by the Leadership Academy.
  • Additional Criteria: Highlight unique business expertise or niche market experience, and provide examples of impactful community service and leadership decisions.
  • Diversity and Inclusion: Demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion. While prior experience in these areas is valued, candidates with limited experience who are eager to develop these skills are encouraged to apply.

 

Application Requirements

  • Complete Your Application: Submit the fully completed application form by the specified deadline. Ensure all sections are filled out thoroughly to present a clear picture of your qualifications and leadership potential.
  • Reference Requirements: Provide three (3) references who can offer a well-rounded perspective on your professional qualifications and character. Ensure that your references are individuals who are familiar with your leadership capabilities and commitment to the real estate industry. Including the Association Executive and/or the President of your local association as one of your references is recommended but not required.
  • Headshot/Photo: Attach a current headshot or photo to personalize your application. While resumes are accepted, they should complement—not replace—the completed application form.

  • Answer Fully and Thoughtfully: Provide comprehensive responses to each question on the application. The more detail and insight you provide, the clearer your qualifications will be to the selection committee.
  • Proofread Your Submission and Utilize Tools: Enhance the clarity and professionalism of your application by using tools like Grammarly or ChatGPT for grammar and style editing. This will help ensure your submission is polished and error-free. Please reread your application before submitting and ensure all questions have been answered. You will be able to edit your application up until the deadline.
  • Be Timely and Complete: Submit your application by the deadline and ensure all required components, including the application form, references, and headshot, are included. Incomplete or late applications may not be considered.
