CONCURRENT SESSION OVERVIEW

We are pleased to invite you to submit a presentation proposal for the Pathways to Equity Conference held in-person on April 8 - 9, 2024 in Anaheim, CA. The Pathways to Equity Conference is an opportunity for the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office to provide professional development around advancing equity.  Administrators, classified professionals and faculty will hear and learn structural changes and practices that have been successfully implemented from a wide range of community college practitioners. The Pathways to Equity Conference will assist colleges and equity warriors in building equity in access, support and success.

The Pathways to Equity Conference is an opportunity for the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office to facilitate professional development and technical assistance to help colleges implement Vision 2030 goals of: Equity in Success, Equity in Access, Equity in Support campus-wide. Vision 2030 advances California Community Colleges’ work improving student outcomes while focusing on key strategic areas:

  • People — Active partnership with relevant stakeholders to help guide practice and provide data, technical assistance and needed supports.
  • Systems — Systems development to remove barriers at scale.
  • Resources — Reimagine and maximize local resources.
  • Policy — Identify and advance local district policy reform across state to unlock potential.

CONCURRENT SESSION FORMAT

There are two formats you can apply for, with varying numbers of audiences:

Traditional Sessions – 45-minute sessions where the speaker provides information in a general lecture format including time for engagement with the audience and time for questions and answers and/or a short discussion.

Feature Sessions – 90-minute sessions are non-lecture sessions where the facilitator provides information in a participatory learning environment that involves audience engagement and interaction. These sessions must include student voices and encourage networking, action planning and college teams working together in a guided discussion.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • We are looking for engaging, interactive sessions that provide innovative ideas, and diverse perspectives including actionable takeaways for participants.
  • A successful submission will:
    • Leave attendees with the tools they need to implement change on their campus.
    • Showcase innovative student/equity-centered strategies.
    • Identify barriers to student equity and provide new and exciting models for addressing them.
    • Present a clearly articulated plan for audience engagement.
    • Push the attendee’s thinking – what hasn’t been considered by this audience? 
    • Share implementation challenges and suggestions.
    • Incorporate a community college student voice into the session.

WHAT WE ARE NOT LOOKING FOR

  • Presenters who talk non-stop for the entire session
  • Presenters who agree on every topic
  • Sales pitches

TIMELINE & IMPORTANT DETAILS

  • You may submit proposals for as many sessions as you would like.
  • All session proposals must be submitted by January 15, 2024.
  • You will have 45 or 90 minutes for your session and your time slot will be determined by the planning committee and communicated shortly after selection.
  • All concurrent session presenters, including student presenters, are required to register for the 2024 Pathways to Equity Conference. Registration information will be provided in the coming months. 

TRACKS – PRESENTERS NEEDED

We are looking for presentation proposals to help inspire change and advance equity efforts across our community college system. Presentation proposals will need to support the tracks listed below, which align with the goals and outcomes for Vision 2030.

PRIMARY AUDIENCE: The primary audience for these presentations will be community college administrators, classified professionals and faculty members throughout the California Community Colleges system.

DAY 1 - TRACK 1

Vision 2030 Goal: Equity in Success

These presentations will focus on strategies, programs and practices that have made a positive impact on students’ success(es).  The following are a few examples of areas these presentations may include but are not limited to:  graduation, degree/certificate completions, transfer rates, course/program completion, career/employment attainment, reducing achievement/equity gaps, decreasing average units accumulated by associate degree earners, increasing the number of exiting CTE students, etc.

As a guide to help you decide on a presentation topic, here are the desired outcomes for the Vision 2030 goal of Equity in Success:

  • Increase with equity the number of California community college students who complete a meaningful educational outcome.
  • Increase with equity the number of California community college students attaining a baccalaureate degree.
  • Increase with equity the number of California community college students who earn a living wage.

DAY 1 - TRACK 2

Vision 2030 Goal: Equity in Access

These presentations will focus on strategies, programs and practices that have successfully supported students in their access to a college education at the community college. The following are a few examples of areas these presentations may include but are not limited to: accessibility, application process to a community college, dual enrollment process, admissions and records process, financial aid process, course registration process, course scheduling, transfer access, baccalaureate attainment, job attainment within field, etc.

As a guide to help you decide on a presentation topic, here is the desired outcome for the Vision 2030 goal of Equity in Access:

  • Increase with equity the number of students attending a California community college, with particular emphasis on the number of underserved Californians.

DAY 1 - TRACK 3

Vision 2030 Goal: Equity in Support

These presentations will focus on strategies, programs and practices that have successfully provided support to students during their time in the community college system. The following are a few examples of areas these presentations may include but are not limited to:  diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, basic needs, mental health support, financial support, adult learners, balancing school and work while caring for dependents, ESL, meeting technology needs for students, developing a climate of belonging, tutorial/supplemental support, support for disproportionately impacted groups, etc.

As a guide to help you decide on a presentation topic, here are the desired outcomes for the Vision 2030 goal of Equity in Support:

  • Increase with equity the number of California Community College students receiving state and federal aid for which they are eligible to better support their educational journey.
  • Decrease with equity the number of units in excess of 60 units for the Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT).

DAY 2 - TRACK 4

Equity in the Future of Learning

These presentations will focus on promising practices and strategies that provide equitable access, support and/or success for at least one of the following items to help support the future of learning and strategic directions for Vision 2030:

  • Vision Aligned Reporting
  • Climate Action
  • Generative AI (Artificial Intelligence)
  • Advance Data Analytics
  • Expanding Experiential and Work-Based Learning Opportunities
  • Increasing Baccalaureate Attainment
  • High Tech/High Touch
  • Direct Aid to Students
  • STEM
  • Healthcare
  • Education
  • Other
