Description

Thank you for your interest in the Housing Leadership Institute (HLI)! This application is designed to help us learn more about your background, leadership journey, and goals. Through this process, we aim to select a cohort of dynamic leaders who are committed to strengthening Virginia’s housing ecosystem and leading in ways that reflect the experiences and insights of the communities they serve.

 

The application includes the following sections:

  • Personal Information: Basic details about you and your professional role.
  • Lived Experience & Representation: A short set of questions to help us understand the range of experiences, communities, and regions reflected in the applicant pool.
  • Professional and Leadership Experience: Short-answer questions that offer space to share your leadership approach, your commitment to building more inclusive and responsive housing systems, and how your lived experience shapes your work.
  • References: You will be asked to invite two professional references to submit letters of recommendation on your behalf. References are contacted after you submit your application. We encourage submitting your application early to allow adequate time for your references to respond before the deadline.

 

Please allow yourself enough time to complete the application thoughtfully. Submissions are reviewed holistically to identify leaders who demonstrate a strong commitment to community-rooted leadership, inclusive practices, and the future of housing in Virginia.

Rules

  • Application Deadline: Applications close on March 2 at midnight (EST). Late submissions cannot be considered.
  • Eligibility: To apply, you must:
    • Have 5+ years of experience in affordable housing or a related field.
    • Live or work in Virginia at the time of application.
    • Demonstrate a clear commitment to elevating proximate leadership—whether through your own lived experience, your work with communities, or your accountability to the people and places you serve.
  • Submission Requirements: Applications must be submitted in full. Incomplete or partially submitted applications will not be reviewed.
  • Notification Timeline: Applicants will be notified of their status beginning April 18.
  • Tuition: Tuition is due by May 14. Payment plans and a limited number of need-based scholarships are available.
  • Program Dates and Attendance: The program begins on June 11. A full schedule is available on our website. Cohort members are expected to attend all in-person sessions and at least 5 of the 7 virtual sessions.
