2023 Regnier Venture Creation Challenge

April 21 & 28, 2023

The Regnier Venture Creation Challenge is a business plan and pitch competition promoting entrepreneurship. Applications are open to university students in Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas and current Entrepreneurship Scholars.

COMPETITION TRACKS

First, decide which competition track is right for you and your venture. Please see detailed eligibility requirements at the bottom of this document. 

  • Regnier College Startup Awards (includes Honorable Mention Awards) 
    • Open to students (undergraduate, graduate, PhD) enrolled at a university or college in Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, or Kansas 
    • Open to Fall 2022/Spring 2023 participants in UMKC E Scholars
  • BlueKC Healthcare Innovation Awards
    • Open to students (undergraduate, graduate, PhD) enrolled at a university or college in Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, or Kansas
    • Open to Fall 2022/Spring 2023 UMKC E Scholars participants with healthcare-related ventures
    • Venture must address a healthcare-related issue
  •  James and Rae Block  Kansas City Startup Awards
    • New starts or early-stage businesses with annual revenue between 0-$250,000
    • The business must be operating in the Kansas City MARC Region (Ray, Clay, Jackson, Cass, Platte, Leavenworth, Wyandotte, Johnson, Miami counties)
    • None of the founding team (equity holders/owners) can be current degree-seeking college students or a Fall 2022/Spring 2023 participant in E Scholars
      • All UMKC E Scholars (Community or student, Fall 2022 and Spring 2023) are in the Regnier College Startup Awards track

CREATE AN ACCOUNT AND SUBMIT

After you've decided in which track you will compete, click the "Signup and Submit Your Venture" button in the top right of this page.

  • Create an account -- Only one account is needed per venture.
  • Provide basic contact information for the venture primary contact -- this the person the RVCC planning team will communicate with about the competition
  • Provide venture information
  • Upload your slide deck and pitch video in the "Attachements" tab in your account

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

All submissons require:

  • A business plan slide deck
  • A 6-minute MAXIMUM pitch video
  • View the RVCC Information Folder for detailed guidelines, business plan slide deck template, and judging criteria.

DATES AND DEADLINES

  • Monday, April 2, 2023: Applications due
    • All applications must be received by 11:59pm CDT on the due date to be considered. Your applications includes a business plan slide deck and a 6-minute maximum pitch video
  • Friday, April 14, 2023: Decisions communicated to all applicants
    • By end of day on April 14, all applicants will be notified via email as to the status of their application
  • Friday, April 21, 2023: Virtual Semifinals Round
    • Semifinalists will present live via Zoom (times TBD)
    • Teams advancing to the Finals round will be announced
  • Friday, April 28, 2023: Finals Round
    • Finalist teams will present live, in-person at UMKC's Bloch School (times TBD)
    • Award winners will be announced

PRIZES

  • Regnier College Startup Awards
    • 1st prize: $15,000
    • 2nd prize: $10,000
    • 3rd prize: $5,000
    • Honorable mentions, $2,500 each:
      • Undergraduate Venture (100% of founding team members must be current undergraduate students)
      • Creative Venture (ventures working in the arts, design, creative, and related fields)
      • Social Venture (this venture is pursuing a mission that considers outcomes beyond only profit; these can be for-profit or non-for-profit ventures)
    • **Note: competitors can only win one prize (a team winning 1st prize can’t also win an honorable mention prize)
  • BlueKC Healtcare Innovation Awards
    • 1st prize: $15,000
    • 2nd prize: $10,000
  • James and Rae Block Kanas City Startup Awards
    • 1st prize: $15,000
    • 2nd prize: $10,000

JUDGING CRITERIA, TEMPLATES, AND MORE

Participation Eligibility

  • Regnier College Startup Awards: 
    • At least one member of the founding team meets one of the following criteria: 
      • Is a degree-seeking university student enrolled at university in Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, or Kansas, AND/OR 
      • Is an Entrepreneurship Scholar (E-Scholar) regardless of credit/non-credit who will complete the E-Scholars program at any point during the 2022/2023 academic year (fall 2022 or spring 2023) 
    • Venture must be new, independent, in the seed, startup, or early growth stages 
    • Venture has not competed in RVCC in previous years with the SAME venture idea AND won finalist prize (1st, 2nd or 3rd place). You are welcome to submit with a substantially different venture idea. 
    • Teams may be no larger than six members. 
    • Ventures participating in this track are eligible for honorable mention awards. 
  • BlueKC Healthcare Innovation Awards eligibility requirements: 
    • At least one member of the founding team meets one of the following criteria: 
      • Is a degree-seeking university student enrolled at university in Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, or Kansas, AND/OR 
      • Is an Entrepreneurship Scholar (E-Scholar) regardless of credit/non-credit who will complete the E-Scholars program at any point during the 2022/2023 academic year (fall 2022 or spring 2023) 
    • Venture must address a healthcare related topic. 
    • Venture must be new, independent, in the seed, startup, or early growth stages 
    • Venture has not competed in RVCC in previous years with the SAME venture idea AND won a finalist prize (1st, 2nd or 3rd place). You are welcome to submit with a substantially different venture idea. 
    • Teams may be no larger than six members. 
    • Ventures participating in this track are eligible for honorable mention awards 
  • James and Rae Block Kansas City Startup Awards: 
    • New starts or early-stage businesses with annual revenues between $0 and $250,000  
    • The business must be operating in the Kansas City MARC region (Missouri Counties: Ray, Clay, Jackson, Cass, and Platte. Kansas Counties: Leavenworth, Wyandotte, Johnson and Miami)  
    • NONE of the founding team (equity holders/owners) can be a current degree-seeking college student, or an E-Scholar 
    • Ventures participating in this track are NOT eligible for honorable mention awards 
  • I have reviewed all information available in the RVCC Information Folder and understand all information about prizes, prize distribution, dates and deadlines, and evaluation criteria. 
  • Past prize winners: if you have won a finalist award (1st place, 2nd place, or 3rd place) for your idea in the past, you are ineligible to compete using the same idea/business
