Application Requirements

Completed applications with: 

  1. A current official transcript from the seminary the applicant is attending.
               a. If graduating from college and entering seminary, then a copy of the final college transcript and a copy of the letter of acceptance from the seminary where the applicant will be studying.
               b. If transferring seminaries, a transcript from the previous seminary is required.
     
  2. The first two pages of the 2025 Federal 1040 form.  The committee may request additional financial information.
     
  3. Three (3) Letters of recommendation are required from:
               a. Your pastor or the pastor of the church where you serve,
               b. Candidacy mentor (if you are in the process of ordination or are already certified) and
               c. The District Superintendent.

These letters must be sent independently of your application.   Recommendations must be received by May 11, 2026.   

Application Submission

Candidates must complete all required parts of the application.

  • All documents MUST be uploaded in PDF, Word, Excel, and/or Google Docs. 

NO PICTURES OR SCREENSHOTS OF DOCUMENTS ARE ACCEPTABLE.

  • Please add the email scholarshipinfo@umcitysociety.org to your safe sender email list.  All correspondence will be done via email. 
  • The applicant must be a member of a United Methodist Church in the New York Annual Conference.
  • The applicant must be enrolled full-time or part-time in a seminary approved by the United Methodist Church University Senate for the 2026-2027 Academic year, pursuing a graduate degree.  Unfortunately, currently, New York Theological Seminary is not approved. 
  • The applicant must be an inquiring candidate, with an assigned mentor, in the candidacy process of the New York Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, or a certified candidate. 
  • Scholarships are given at different funding levels for part-time and full-time students. The number and the value of the awards vary based on the number of applicants, financial need, funding levels, and excellence of ministry.
  • Scholarships are awarded annually.  Applicants must apply separately each academic year.
